(14) Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP) vs (10) Venus Williams (USA)
At 37 years of age, Venus Williams is vying for her first Grand Slam title in 9 years and her 6th Wimbledon title. After a few years in relative tennis wilderness, Venus has returned to the top of her game and been in sensational form this year.
Her opponent, Garbiñe Muguruza, is also no stranger when it comes to winning majors having won last year’s French Open. Muguruza has played some great tennis over the past fortnight and will play off in her second Wimbledon final.
Both these players are big hitters and I expect a final with plenty of big shotmaking, strong serving and attacking play. It’s extremely close on paper so let’s have a look at the matchup.
How Garbiñe Muguruza will win…
Muguruza has served well this tournament but it’s been her finishing from both the back of the court and the net that has helped her get the better of opponents. She is solid on both forehand and backhand sides but she has also shown a willingness to come into the net to finish off points. Williams has been rock solid from the back of the court this tournament so Muguruza will need to pick her approach shots well. If she does this and doesn’t allow Williams the opportunities to set herself up for big groundstrokes, she could be too good.
How Venus Williams will win…
Venus has been serving well and she will use this again as one of her strengths in order to set up the remainder of the point. Both players have been playing attacking tennis so we could see similar game styles but I think it’s important that Venus doesn’t get the run around from Muguruza and that she controls the points. If Venus serves well she will be tough to break and she can then put pressure straight back on Muguruza.Prediction
It’s a great matchup on paper. Both players have similar game styles and I believe it could come down to who is able to play the more consistent tennis over 3 sets. Both players will go after their shots and try and win points early on in the rally.
Venus Williams knows this is probably one of her last chances to win a major and I think she won’t be denied the chance. Tough one to pick, but I’m selecting the veteran to get up in a tight final.
